Children at risk

In major migration areas like Sangkhlaburi social pressures and poverty create risks to children's wellbeing. Children may end up in unacceptable situations, suffering from neglect, domestic violence, or other forms of abuse.

With significant problems in the region, the provincial Social Services covering Sangkhlaburi District are, through no fault of their own, widely overstretched. Currently, 10 government social workers cover a province containing one million people.

Making matters even more difficult, while Thailand's 2003 Child Protection Act provides a good framework for protecting children from harm, there is a long way to go until it is fully implemented nationwide.
